Plastic takes a lot of time to degrade and is harmful to the environment. In Brazil, supermarket chains distribute one billion plastic bags every month to shoppers, that is, 33 million every day and 12 billion plastic bags in one single year. It is estimated that 80% of them are used just once and then disposed of. Made of filmy plastic, they are hard to recycle and easily blow into trees and waterways, where they are blamed for killing marine life. They also occupy much-needed landfill space.
To contribute to the reduction of daily plastic bags’ use, Slaviero Hotel Chain has launched the Conscious Style Project. Together with well-known artists, eco-friendly bags were designed and will be sold at the 16 Slaviero hotels.
All profits will be donated to the Projeto Florestas do Futuro (Future Forests Project), of the Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica. The bags were manufactured by Econtexto, an eco-friendly products’ manufacturer, which produces the items with no impact to the environment.
